Why Don’t I Feel High?

Many novice cannabis users experience a surprising phenomenon: they don’t feel high at all. This situation provokes the inevitable question: “Can You be Immune to Weed?” The short answer is yes; sure, some people do display natural resistance to cannabis experiences, but complete immunity is rarer.

Can You be Immune to Weed?

Cannabis acts differently on everyone, with many biological factors shaping how THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) interacts with your body.  The main reason some people may appear to be “Immune to Weed” has to do with the endocannabinoid system (ECS)–the biological system that cannabis compounds bind to. Studies show about 20% of people have genetic mutations that make their CB1 receptors (the main site where THC binds) change in some way. Those genetic differences can profoundly influence the effect of cannabis, as some may have much less sensitivity to cannabis. Your metabolism is important. Some people naturally have more of the enzymes that can quickly metabolize THC before it has a chance to produce full psychoactive effects. If you have enzymes that break THC down more quickly, the drug is cleared before you perceive an effect.

Other reasons could explain why you did not feel high:

  • Complications arising from a novice trip: many people will not recognize subtler effects of cannabis or have not learned a proper way to inhale. The unique experience of being “high” is not always obvious without context.
  • Low quality or aged product. Cannabis is sensitive to age and improper storage can diminish potency. What you consumed may have had very few active compounds.
  • Cross-tolerance from medications. Some medications could block and/or diminish the effects of cannabis, especially when neurochemical regulation like serotonin or dopamine is affected in the brain.
  • Reverse tolerance. Unlike most drugs, some people require several exposures to cannabis before their system ”learns” how to process THC and subsequently can experience the benefits of the drug; sometimes referred to as “sensitization.”
  • Resistance on an unconscious level. Psychological variables can create unconscious blocks. If you’re timid, overthinking your experience, or you expect substantial effects, your mind can prevent you from “feeling” the subtle shifts in your physiology.
If you suspect you are naturally resistant to cannabis, there are a few things that may help. First, try other methods of delivering cannabis—edibles bypass first-pass metabolism and may impact, especially for resistant users, much more strongly. Second, try different ratios of cannabinoids. Although THC is the psychoactive compound in cannabis, CBD plays an important role in mitigating adverse effects. It’s not unusual to require less THC to achieve outcomes, so try THC to CBD ratios, especially with both THC and CBD present. The cannabis ingestion paradigm doesn’t always mean more is better. Paralleling, microdosing is paradoxically more likely to yield effects in resistant users, as it restricts excessive receptor saturation. Having not experienced strong effects, however, doesn’t mean that cannabis is ineffective. Many users have reported functional low-dose effects, such as a gentle elevation in mood, limited anxiety or stress responses, gentle softening of consciousness, and soft body relaxation often without a psychoactive aspect.
